Desiring to have an extraordinary adventure? Try caving to see and experience mysterious places you’ve never seen before! Exploring caves is much likely entering an entirely new world. These mysterious spots await you, explorers, as if they are pleading you to see their amazing rock formations and bodies of water.
If you have never experienced caving yet, here are some helpful tips for your caving adventure:
• Do your research. Before getting all giddy for your exploration, it is essential to spend some time learning about the cave you’re going to explore. If the cave has streams or waterfalls, check if it is in danger of flooding and know its temperature so you can dress accordingly. Also, confirm if there are any fees, guidelines, and restrictions before going to the cave. As the old saying goes, it is better to be safe than sorry.
• Gear up! Appropriate clothing will vary depending on the cave. If your cave has bodies of water, it is preferrable to wear clothes which dry quickly, such as synthetic fibers and woolens. (You wouldn’t want to get sick or injured—or worse, acquire hypothermia—because of wrong clothing choices, right?) Gloves, sturdy shoes, and durable backpack would complete your caving attire.
Bring the basic necessities, such as food, water, first aid kit, light-mounted helmet with chin strap, spare batteries and sources of light, extra clothes, plastic trash bag, compass, and maps, if necessary. Don’t go overboard and ensure that you’re bringing only the essentials to make your travel light.
• Safety is the key. A fun adventure could easily turn into a disaster. To avoid accidents, be sure to take note of the precautionary measures, bring proper equipment, and wear appropriate clothing. Also, tow a first aid kit with you.
For beginning cavers, it is usual to become lost during the expedition. Familiarize yourself with the appearance and directions of the cave to reduce the risk of becoming lost. Leaving non-permanent marks could also be helpful.
• Care for the caves. In our country, our government implements Republic Act. No. 9072, which is also known as National Caves and Cave Resources Management and Protection Act. It aims “to conserve, protect and manage caves and cave resources as part of the country's natural wealth.” We explorers are not exempted from this responsibility and it is significant to practice cave conservation and observe the “leave no trace” policy.
When caving, be extra careful in stepping and touching the mineral deposits and rock formations because they are fragile and can be damaged by even the gentlest touch.
You might be new to cave exploration, but it is actually fun to experience new things once in a while.
What are you waiting for? Plan your caving expedition now. An exciting adventure awaits you.
